Every year, December brings holidays and festivities to America. People join for parties, events and charity. However, there is a deeper issue that needs attention during December. The United States sees daily drunk driving accidents throughout the year. Unfortunately, drunk driving tends to increase during the month of December. A drunk driver should never even sit behind the steering wheel since it puts themselves and others in deadly circumstances. So, in addition to the December holidays, the US celebrates National Impaired Driving Prevention Month.
For National Impaired Driving Prevention Month 2016, President Barack Obama made a proclamation stating that the US will recognize this month with practices to make the roads safer. President Obama’s proclamation also states that American should make responsible decisions to prevent impaired driving. For this month and holiday season, there are many campaigns that represent safe and sober driving. For example, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over theme. Individual states have also made initiatives that are specific to their state’s laws.
Texas Department of Transportation
Texas has their own set of rules that follow along with the nation’s alcohol guidelines. The state of Texas joins President Obama and the rest of the country by developing a state-wide campaign. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has two themes for this month. TxDOT has a Plan While You Can theme as well as Jail Ain’t Jolly. Texas has many drunk driving statistics due to the 26.9 million people living throughout the state. The campaigns for National Impaired Driving Prevention Month all tie into the holiday theme. For TxDOT, this organization works on seasonal campaigns that relate to current events or other holidays.
December is part of the holiday season so parties and family gatherings may include alcohol. The nation and state do not discourage all alcoholic beverages. Above all, the goal is to ensure that Americans plan a safe ride home. Every campaign urges people to choose a sober ride home. Other groups provide safe rides for free or a small cost. The city of Houston has several transportation options like Uber or Metro. The Uber application allows people to find their closest Uber driver. All transactions go through the smartphone app. Metro has bus routes and railways that run on a regular schedule. People can buy a day pass if they know they will be needing a sober ride home during the holidays.
A sober ride home protects the driver, passengers and other cars on the road. Driving with a clear mind gives everyone a chance to celebrate the holidays safely. National Impaired Driving Prevention Month works to spread this message all over the US.
